Why do you always translate into your mother tongue?
So as a translation “sounds right”, you should not sense the foreign origin of the text. This is only possible when working into your mother tongue. This is why translators only work in one direction, even if they are fluent in several languages. Only a few translators work in both directions as they have two mother tongues.
What is the difference between source and target language?
Source language is the starting language, the origin of the text. The target language is the final language, into which the text is translated. This is the mother tongue of the translator.
What is the rate of reduction?
This is the percentage corresponding to the difference in the number of words between the source and target language.
For instance, in German: die Wortzahl, is translated as: the word count. In this example, 2 German words leads to 3 English words. On average, for instance, a translation from German to French has a 20% to 30% reduction rate. This is specific to each language pair. This is why we almost always calculate the number of words to be translated from the source text.
Why is there a price difference from one language to the other?
Quite simply because the number of translators practising the language is higher or lower. For this reason, it is more difficult to confer the translation of a contract to a Norwegian translator specialising in the legal field than an English translator with the same skills set.
Moreover, we always indicate on our estimate the number of source words to be translated and the price excluding VAT per source word, which allows us to draw comparisons from one language to the next.
